What it is not is a better separation engine than LALAL.AI. They are a dedicated separation vendor with more stem types than we break out and a purpose-built network, and if raw separation quality on a hard track is the whole job, that is what they are for.

Separation is their entire product: Andromeda for instruments, Lynx for speech, more selectable stem types than we break out — electric and acoustic guitar among them, as separate parts — and inclusion in Meta’s SAM Audio comparison of separation models. The Audio Expansion is built for the job an editor actually has — kill the music and keep the dialogue, or pull the vocal off a bed — done on the timeline in the time it takes to describe it. Pick on which of those two problems you have.

Not as a panel, on the material we have read. LALAL.AI ships a web app, desktop apps for Windows, macOS and Linux, mobile apps, a VST3 plugin and an API — their apps-and-plugins page listed no Adobe extension when we read it. The VST3 plugin is aimed at DAWs; the page noted AU support in beta and no AAX build, so Pro Tools is unsupported. For a Premiere editor that means the usual round-trip: export or upload the audio, separate, download, re-import, re-sync. It depends entirely on how many audio jobs you have. If stems are the only one, LALAL.AI is cheaper to start — they run a free tier, an annual-billed subscription ladder, and one-time minute packs as a separate purchase route. Every current rate, including which pack price is a dated promotion against a higher list price, is in the comparison table on this page rather than restated here, because that is the number most likely to move. The Audio Expansion is $69.99 one-time and requires the $149.99 base license, so buying it purely to split tracks means paying for three workflows you would not use.

The math inverts once voiceover, sound effects and score are also on your list. Those are three more subscriptions next to the LALAL.AI plan, where the expansion covers all four in one $69.99 purchase — $199.99 for the Creator Bundle if you do not own the panel yet, or included while a $24.99/mo Creator Pass is active. Generation itself is billed by your own provider account at published rates rather than resold as credits.

LALAL.AI does, on their top tier. Their Lyra-powered VST3 plugin and desktop app process on-device, which they market as no uploads and no server queues — a genuine advantage on NDA, legal or medical audio. Worth checking before you buy on price: their pricing page lists local processing with Lyra and the VST plugin against their Pro tier only, not the tier below it. The Audio Expansion is bring-your-own-key and runs generation and separation through your provider account in the cloud, so it needs a connection.

Not documented, and it does not appear to be the intent. Their products — Stem Splitter, Voice Cleaner, Voice Changer, Voice Cloner, Echo and Reverb Remover, Lead/Back Splitter — all operate on audio you already have. Voice Cloner is worth calling out precisely: it is speech-to-speech, so it re-voices a recording rather than reading a typed script. No text-to-speech, sound-effect generation or music generation appeared in the line-up we read. That enumeration comes from an earlier read of their product pages, so treat it as their published scope at the time rather than a vendor denial.

Yes, and for a lot of editors that is the right answer. Do the routine splits in the panel where they land on the timeline and cost you nothing but provider usage, and send the hard track — the one where an artifact would show — to LALAL.AI where the separation engine is the product. They solve overlapping problems at different depths.
